Student life at HCSS extends far beyond the classroom. Our students discover new passions and build meaningful connections through a wide range of clubs, athletics, robotics, fine arts, service projects, and leadership opportunities — all within a safe, and supportive school community. At HCSS, every student has a place to learn, grow, and belong.
Art communicates ideas, expresses emotion, tells stories, and brings beauty to the world around us. It is everywhere — in nature, in design, in the media, and in the everyday objects we use. Art also reflects culture, identity, and belief. By creating art, students learn about themselves while developing a deeper, more thoughtful awareness of the world around them.
The Visual Arts Program at HCSS provides students with rich opportunities to explore their creativity through both two-dimensional and three-dimensional media. Students experiment with a variety of materials, techniques, and artistic styles as they build confidence and discover their unique artistic voice.
The HCSS Arts Program emphasizes:
Self-discovery as an artist
Expressing ideas and emotions through artwork
Developing strong artistic skills and techniques
Understanding art within historical and cultural contexts
Throughout the year, HCSS proudly showcases student artwork at our Art Exhibitions, celebrating creativity, craftsmanship, and the vibrant artistic community within our school.
The HCSS Voice Program helps students develop confident, healthy singing skills through both solo and choral repertoire. Students explore a variety of vocal styles while first building a strong foundation in singing in tune with natural, healthy vocal technique. Music is performed in multiple languages — including English, Latin, French, Japanese, and Spanish — giving students exposure to diverse musical traditions.Students learn basic music-reading skills and gain an understanding of vocal music history.
The HCSS Band and Guitar Program emphasizes collaboration, leadership, and responsibility. Much like a team sport, every member plays a vital role in the ensemble’s success. Students may choose from a variety of band instruments and learn to perform both solo and ensemble music, exploring melodic, harmonic, and chordal techniques.
In addition to developing basic music-reading skills, students study elements of folk and popular music history. Students perform in annual Concerts and may be asked to participate in additional school-wide events.
Performance Arts (Music & Theater) is a high school elective that blends vocal performance with storytelling and character development. Rather than serving as an introductory acting or formal vocal technique course, this program focuses on the expressive intersection of music, drama, and character portrayal.
Students learn and perform solo and ensemble repertoire from musical theater, opera, and ballad traditions. Throughout the year, they explore how to interpret text and music, work effectively with accompaniment, and overcome physical tensions that affect vocal expression. Regular performances and peer critiques help students grow artistically and confidently.
Students frequently perform at major school events, including Black History Month celebrations, Multicultural Night, and School Plays, showcasing their talents and developing stage presence.

At HCSS, we believe that proper nutrition is essential for student well-being, behavior, and academic success. A healthy meal sets students up for a productive school day, and our nutrition program ensures that every student has access to nutritious food at no cost.
Through our partnership with Springfield Public Schools and participation in the Community Eligibility Program (CEP) under the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), all HCSS students receive free breakfast and lunch every school day.
HCSS East and West follow all federal nutrition guidelines to provide balanced, wholesome meals. Breakfast and lunch are offered daily to all students, and those who stay after school for tutoring, extra help, or extracurricular activities receive a nutritious snack and beverage, also aligned with federal nutritional standards.
Our commitment to healthy meals supports student focus, attendance, and overall success, both in and out of the classroom.
